WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU BRING YOUR FLOWERS HOME

  • Check water level IMMEDIATELY UPON ARRIVAL.

  • Add warm water (100°F) with floral preservative as needed

  • Re-cut stem ends under water, using sharp floral clippers
    or knife

  • Replace water every day fresh water (100°F) with floral
    preservative daily

  • Display in a cool location out of direct sunlight. 
    Try to avoid excessive heat or cold

  • If a rose wilts, straighten and submerge the entire flower in warm water for approximately two hours.  This process re-hydrates the rose instantly.

COMMON PROBLEMS WITH POTTED PLANTS

SYMPTOM

CAUSE REMEDY
Yellowing leaves Lack of nitrogen Water the plant regularly and include liquid fertilizer.
Soft stems Too much water or plant set too deep in soil Let plant dry out, then establish how much water to give it.  Transplant to larger pot.
Curling leaves No drainage hole in pot; too much water in roots. Transplant to pot with drainage hole; establish a regular watering schedule.
Dropping old, young leaves Old: sudden decrease in light

New: soil too heavy

Old: put plant in sunny area.

New: repot with mixture of potting soil and vermiculite.

Black, misshapen leaves Soil too salty Remove plant from pot and flush salts out of soil and roots. Repot.
Lackluster leaves during new growth Underfed Begin fertilizing plant on a regular basis
Brown tips on leaves Fluoride injury Trim off damaged areas; keep soil uniformly moist.
Tan spots on leaves Too much direct sunlight Move plant away from direct sunlight.
Black spots on leaves Drafts Move plant away from sources of drafts (outside doors, heating or cooling units).
Spots on leaves, stems Insect eggs Regularly wash leaves, stems with warm, soapy water. Rinse. Also remove dirt and insecticides.  (Don't do this on hairy-surfaced leaves.)
White fuzz on leaves

Flying "dandruff"

Mealy bug or whitefly White fuzz: treat plant with insecticide registered for use against mealy bug, available from local hardware or plant supply stores.  Dandruff: rub leaves with rubbing alcohol every three to four days and treat with insecticide registered for use against whitefly.
Brown scales on stems Small brown insects Rub leaves with rubbing alcohol every three to four days.
Web-like matter on leaves' underside Red spider Wash plant.  Treat with insecticide registered for use against Red Spider.
Green scum on soil's surface Algae and moss Remove old topsoil and replace with new.
Pale, colorless new leaves that quickly turn brown Lack of humidity Spray leaves. If possible, raise humidity in room
